Facebook has been around for a few years now and it’s popularity increases by the minute, despite some efforts against it. A lot of my friends, colleagues and family are on Facebook, myself included. A recent post on Ramon Suarez’s site about Facebook caught my eye. It concerned the Facebook usage in Belgium (and another about Spain) stating that 1 out 3 Belgians is a member of the Facebook community, which surprised me quite a bit. This encouraged me to do my own research, not that I doubt his sources, I just wanted to expand the reach of the research and see for myself. So I set forth to find the amount of users per country and comparing that with the latest statistics concerning population for the same country. A spreadsheet and a bit of photoshop/paint later I came up with this (simple) graph representing the national Facebook usage statistics for Western Europe.

Dankzij de vele technologische snufjes die alsmaar sneller worden uitgevonden, evolueert ook het leven en alles daarin mee met deze technologieën. Een uitvinding die al bij al nog niet zo heel oud is, is het internet. Toch heeft het al een serieuze impact gehad op hoe wij omgaan met dingen, en hoe dingen ons bereiken. Alsmaar meer mensen worden lid van de online gemeenschap in zijn verschillende facetten. Ze worden lid van een sociaal netwerk zoals facebook of netlog of ze starten hun eigen blog. Ook bedrijven passen zich aan aan de nieuwe media om mee te kunnen met de gewoonten van Jan Modaal.
